The Library Am Guisanplatz

Aussenansicht der Bibliothek am Guisanplatz

The Library Am Guisanplatz (BiG), previously called the Swiss Military Library Service, forms an element of the General Secretariat’s communication activity and is open to the public. It is the specialist information centre for subjects such as history, the armed forces, civil protection, traffic, energy, migration, environment, commerce and so on. In a rapidly changing world, the library ensures the long-term provision of information, documentation and literature.

Since the beginning of 2009, the BiG has been responsible for the federal administration’s combined libraries, the Alexandria libraries. This merger was a result of the cross-departmental project No. 8 (the concentration of the federal administration’s library and documentation services in the Bern area), which brought together 44 of the federal administration’s libraries in the Bern area. The BiG now coordinates all the federal administration’s libraries, ensures close cooperation in the field of information and documentation and runs the federal documentation conference.
