Switzerland’s security: Federal Intelligence Service - Situation Report 2012
Switzerland’s strategic environment changed in 2011: this is the conclusion of the Federal Intelligence Service (FIS) in its Situation Report 2012. The debt crisis in Europe and the Arab Spring have also influenced security in Switzerland. The situation radar is a new tool the FIS has created to present a comprehensive assessment of the threats. |

Deployment of unarmed Swiss military observers in Syria
The Federal Council has decided in a circular procedure to send up to eight army members to participate in the mission to monitor the ceasefire and the peace plan in Syria. This decision is a response to an enquiry by the UN. |

Phishing, fraud and ransomware on the rise – 14th MELANI semi-annual report
In the second half of 2011, the Reporting and Analysis Centre for Information Assurance (MELANI) observed an increase in phishing attacks, attempted fraud and ransomware. This and other information is included in the semi-annual report published today. |

Swiss national presides the scientific advisory board of the OPCW
On 16 April, Stefan Mogl, head of the chemistry department of the SPIEZ LABORATORY, was elected as chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The OPCW is responsible for the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention that pursues the destruction and non-proliferation of chemical weapons. Switzerland has chairmanship in the scientific advisory board for the first time and is thus able to actively contribute to developments in this important disarmament treaty. |

Switzerland to participate in the advance team of the UN mission to Syria
On Wednesday, the Federal Council decided to send up to six members of the Swiss Armed Forces to take part in the advance team of the UN mission to report on a cessation of violence in Syria. They will be deployed as unarmed military observers. This decision was taken following a request from the UN. |

International SERA Event in Berne
From 16 to 20 April Switzerland hosts the „Session Européenne des Résponsables de l’Armament“ (SERA) in Berne. In the armament policy domain SERA is an important international event for Switzerland. In cooperation with the Swiss industry armasuisse organises – for the second time after 2002 – one of four course weeks. |
